The Primary Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864, gives a complete detailed list of occupiers of land, tenements and houses. Better known as Griffith's Valuation, it is arranged by counties and within counties by Poor Law Union Divisions and within Unions and then by parish and townland. For each townland the following information is recorded:
Occupier of the land or house
Name of the person from whom the property was leased
Description of the property
Acreage of the farm
Valuation of the land and buildings
In the absence of census returns Griffiths Valuation has become the single most important resource in 19th century Irish genealogy as it records almost the entire population and identifies exactly where they lived and what they owned. If your ancestor rented a house or even a cottage and had any sort of land at all then they will be found in Griffiths Valuation. To this end it can be used as a substitute for the 1841/1851 census and once a family has been found it is then possible to go back and find them in the Tithe Applotment Books and forward through the Revision Books to the 1901 census.
