Mr. Costello, my grandmother, Jane (Murnien) Connor, was born in Cleator Moor, Cumberland in 1880, but her parents were John and Mary (Garvey) Murnin/Murning/Mourning/etc., and from other evidence I believe they were from Kilcoo. John, born c. 1851, immigrated to Cleator Moor c. 1875, married Mary there in 1875, and died there in 1915 at the home of his son, also John, at 2 Ivy Cottages. In 1901 and 1911 Mary headed the household, and I believe for at least part of this time the senior John was in South Africa mining gold; his death record shows he was a gold miner. The father of my John was a Peter Murnin, and the name Peter appears frequently in other Murnien/Murnin/Murning families, including an immigrant to Montana. There was a Peter Murnien who married Margaret Connor in 1847, and their children baptized in Kilcoo included John; all this would match my great-grandfather's data.
Other families that intermarried with the Murniens I have traced are McManus from Kilcoo, Garvey from Co. Down, and Connor/O'Connor from Downpatrick.
If you are related to my Murniens/Murnins I would enjoy exchanging further information. Cheers, Liz
